Baja Designs has a spectacular aura about
Default Considering Weller SV1000 Swap

While we have not had a chance to tear into it our motor locked up last time we were out in Glamis. We are going to tear into it and see what we find but are looking for more reliability and wouldn't mind more power to go along with it. I would love to go with the R1 swap but don't think our chassis is widened enough for it. The SV1000 swap seems like a solid choice since it would fit without question and offer the reliability we are looking for. If anyone else is looking into this swap or has experience with it let me know your thoughts.

We ride Glamis, Ocotillo, Stoddard Wells, Corral Canyon so a little of everything.

I am not too concerned with losing reverse but am wondering if the gearing is going to be low enough to crawl up some of the rocky hills found in Corral Canyon and Stoddard Wells without having to be all over the clutch.

My other concern is that we are going to wish I had the power of the R1 in there when we are duning or should the SV1000 keep me happy. The biggest thing we are looking to gain is reliability and without making it so hard to drive that we can't let our girlfriends follow us in it on rides. Any input is appreciated!

Chris I saw a video of a rhino with the SV1000 installed and looks like that thing hauls. I dont know anyone that has installed that motor. Have you talked to Weller? .................... Myself and acouple of UTVUG members might be planning a trip soon to Stoddard Wells you should join us (ofcourse if you get your ride running).

I know I AM a Weller, so my input might not be the unobjective opinion you are probably looking for, but I DO have experience with the SV1000 motor, since I had it in my Super Rhino back in 2006/2007.

The SV sounds like a good fit for you and where you ride. Unless you are doing creepy, crawly steep uphill technical stuff, if you gear your Rhino on the low end it should do well.

Powerwise, it's got plenty of power. It has as much as the R1, it's just a different kind of power. The R1, while it has a suprisingly broad, useful powerband, it's still a punchy, race type of power - it's happiest on the pipe and screaming around. The SV1000 is more of an all around power - not really a powerband, just broad, useable, throaty kind of power. There is still an RPM range with the SV where it gets on it, but even when it's not in the power, it's still torquey.

Hope that makes sense.....we have a couple of kits running around right now, but not sure if they are on the forums.

I'm currently in the infant stages of doing the SV1000 swap. I had a great motor in my rhino however couldn't afford to replace it again. So while it was still fresh and running strong I sold it. I picked up a motor and all the items for the swap at a fraction of the cost of rebuilding a rhino motor. I know if I was to lose a motor there is NO way I would rebuild the 660 or 700 motor.

sv would be in my top pick for a streetbike engine also, due to size.

neither are going to be "crawler" friendly IMO.

Thanks for the responses everyone this is kind of what I am looking for. I just want to make sure there is nothing anyone else has heard or thought of, good or bad, about the swap that I am missing. We have missed out on way too many group rides and had little issues cut our weekends with the rhino short and I think this might be our answer.

RhinoDan - PM me with the details of the SW trip if the Rhino is not fixed we can come ride bikes. It would be good to meet some more UTVUG members!

450grl - Thanks for the input my next step was to give you guys a call for some expert input. I have been watching all the videos I can find of your old super rhino!

007Rhino - good call on your part I wish our motor was running and could be sold we only have 200 miles on a fresh top end and valve job.

07fj - Yea the fit of the SV1000 looks great we just don't know much about them and are just looking into them. We don't do much that I would consider "crawling" so we should be good but don't want to rule it out since I have always wanted to take it up to Big Bear and the sorts.

JoeyD23 - I will take that 720 off your hands so you have en excuse to do the swap. With the Fat Rod finished you must be bored and itching to do some wrenching!

first off- nice looking car!

I plan on going this route if anything happens again to my motor. Its not the fastest or best motor. but it is faster then a rhino motor.
