Today (December 16th, 2010) I had the pleasure to join Jeff Knoll of King Of The Hammers and Reid Nordin of Kawasaki on a trip out to the "Hammers" in Johnson Valley to check out this years UTV course and discuss plans for this years 3rd annual UTV race.

In addition to pre running potential areas of the course we also discussed some details of the race and got some answers to the questions a lot of you have so here are some of the Bullet Points of todays run and meating!

This is a DONATION and not Mandatory but all attendees will be encouraged to donate for the good of the community.

-In light of the California 200 tragedy King Of The Hammers officials have instituded spectator areas for the race. This will mean that certain areas will not be open to spectating. This is to protect both the spectators and the racers as well as the sport in general. Please respect the new spectator rules.

Thank for posting my video. I appreciate it. I was glad to hear any rumors of not having the race go away. Jeff was cool about any questions I wanted to ask.

We'll have our RZR-S ready for the race. I can't wait to get it out there, and I'm definitely up for congregating together somewhere at Hammer Town with side by sides. It will be cool to meet you guys out there. HCR is doing my suspension and tuning, so my RZR will probably be hanging around his pit.

The biggest problem is the place gets absolutely packed. Really need to have everyone take some extra time off and get there well before the UTV race. There is a ton going on during the week, and if you find yourself bored with LCQ, etc, for the buggy race, you can just go for a ride. Awesome place for UTVs to explore.

Great time today! Anyone planning to race is going to have a blast! Expect some of the challenges of the first year with a great mix of open desert and technical transfer sections with fewer whoops then in the past. These pictures might look nasty but if wasn't for a couple of driving errors and a front diff that wouldn't lock we would have been much better off. The good news is Jeff really is learning the potential of SXS's (especially the Teryx) and that is good for us as a community.

Jeff and Hammer King Productions have gone out of their way to make this event awesome for the UTV community so don't miss out.

It is our plan to have a large area set aside for the UG compound that is slightly off the beaten path. The Underground flag will be raised on friday night and will be there all week. Joey will post up the Google map location when we know we have the prime spot.

Kawasaki Team Green will be on hand at the event and available to any Teryx team that needs emergency parts or technical advice.

Nothing but respect for what a slightly modified UTV can do in the rocks, and even more for the co driver/navigator/spotters who will do the heavy lifting during the UTV race.

I had a total blast riding and spotting Reid yesterday, I wish I could race. The UTV race was something I personally wanted to see improvement on over the last two years. I have not prerun a KOH course in one shot since 2008, until this UTV race course came along.

We went old school on the course layout. KOH course mapping is done via computer now as we have tons of files on the JV area and have a pretty extensive knowledge of what the Ultra4 cars can do.

For the UTV race course I can tell you I have spent more time on the ground doing recon. Using our computer files, and backing it up with actual runs around the course I think that this is by far the best of the three race courses.

I think the winner will finish in just over 2 hours, the average will be around 3 hours and the guys left running will come in around 4 hours. 3 hours may not seem like a long time behind the wheel, but your spotter will be happy its over. After the last rock trail I was pretty much done with stacking rocks and running around on them.

Some pointers;
Our Warn Winch saved us a number of times during our course testing. You can see in the photo's Joey posted that even his sneak peak required us to use the winch. You will want a winch and a good rope.
Warn will be on hand in Hammertown They are a series sponsor, but really the only choice for your winching needs.

Get a spotter thats in good shape. If your idea of training is a 12 pack of beer and a pizza, you might want to reconsider racing to win and be satisfied with a finish. The spotter will be key.

Make sure you UTV is in top shape. To date we have had no failures of the different Kawasaki's we have been using. A couple scratches, and a lost muffler is the extent of damage done from multiple runs around the course.

I am just learning the UTV market, but I am pretty sure the worst you could see would be a belt failure, maybe a cv or shaft if you get out of control in the rocks.

Have fun be safe and know your personal limits. This event is the largest Competitive event on BLM land in California. In light of the Ca200 all eyes will be on us. We need the entire community to come together for this event and make sure the BLM knows we are willing to follow the rules.

Please apply peer pressure to those who are not, and remind them that the future of this and other events swings in the balance. maintain a safe distance from the race course if you are coming out to watch, use common sense, dont drive on a hot race course, don't try and touch the race cars, and please don't drink and drive. Keep your drinking in your camp, or get a ride into hammertown.

We have had to hire an extremely large amount of LEO, and I would hate for your week to end early with a ride to the station for a DUI.

Reid taught me what they can do with multiple trips out to JV. That is really tells me that Kawasaki truly supports racing.

Jon's car weighs in at 1399lbs. with 4 gallons of fuel, but without spare tire, aluminum sides, jack and tools.
Pretty good for a race car with full cage, running beadlocks and heavy tires.
My Prowler likewise, is not very heavy either, yes, more than stock, but less than 1500 dry weight without tools.

Stock or semi-stock UTVs with stock fuel tanks are allowed, but I'm running a fuel cell as are some others.

I think stock fuel cell is still OK. Need roof and nets. You can race solo, but the report from Jeff is this year he would not recommend it - Read winch and push/pull to get over rocks!

Yeah, 10 minute delay and there will only be 4 entries...smart azz... :D

I think with the economy, additional racing with SNORE and other things, it's made many leery of sending off entry forms and fees till they know they are in for sure.
Hell, I'm pushing to get my car ready, but work and family have redirected much of my time. I'll be pushing the wire to get done, but am still entering and going...

Fox racing suits, it's like 300 hundred for the one piece withs shoe and gloves, order one size bigger seems to work best , they have a size chart but go one size over your size , also DEZERT REBELZ 1940 RZR will be there, sent in our entry this morning, can't wait last year we DNF , so this year we got a bone to pick. I'm excited for the rock section( don't know if my Co-Dog is though) hope to see you all there, hope we get a better turn out than last year

The max amount of entries is 50. We can take entries until we get that high which I don't see happening.

That being said we can take your entry onsite but please understand that we have a lot of stuff going on with our main event. Look at the schedule on our website and you will see how busy the week is. We can not set aside a whole day to accept UTV entries. Our races are Pre reg only so we don't have a staff that can process a grip of UTV entries on Weds night.

Our staff leaves for the Lakebed in one week. I would say at this point if you don't get your entry in the mail toady you will have to register on site. I would hope you can do that in the listed hours of opperation for the driver check in. Weds within those hours will be your last chance to get registered.

I need a few course workers for the UTV race, Reid has set up some, but if you would like to give us a hand just make sure you are at the UTV drivers meeting.

We might be able to help. I sent you a PM about helping on Pirate a while back but never got a response. Our car won't be ready this year and hope to get in the main race next year so getting involved would be good for us.

well we can help you at the race, if you get the car there and need help finishing it up. last year we were literally working on our car to finish it the morning of the race , had to run across the desert in my long johns to get my fire suit on , gotta say it was totally worth, it was the best five miles of racing ever :-) really hope you make it , much luck to you

My volunteers are waiting to hear something from you but I'm guessing you are so swamped that you may not get to them before the event? I believe they are already committed so I'll fill them in a little and we can assign duties when they arrive at HammerTown.

King of the Hammers Team Challenge – Best Prepared Trail Rig
Applications Due by Tuesday Feb. 8th - OPEN to KOH Participants and Spectators

EVENT: Wednesday Feb. 9th 6pm, Main Stage Hammer Town.
HOSTED by Del Albright, BlueRibbon Coalition Ambassador; Cal4 EA Coordinator; Access Army Grand Poobah

5 teams (at least) will be selected to participate. 4x4’s and Side-x-Side (UTV) rigs. Any team of up to four (4) folks can compete. It’s all for fun and a little fame, with a cool trophy from Raceline Wheels for the winning team. Also, several businesses have stepped up to provide swag, goodies, and freebies to participants and the audience.

HOW it WORKS: Put together a Team of your friends or club members who can be at the event on Wednesday Feb. 8th in time to compete at 6pm. This is a treasure hunt for goodies used on a trail ride. No driving necessary. Rigs will be parked.

Team Challenge Details:
Wednesday night Feb. 8th at 6pm, Main Stage, Hammer Town.
It will be a TEAM challenge and not just a CLUB challenge. However clubs can be a team. 4 folks max per rig; best prepared trail type rig; treasure hunt of things IN and ON the vehicle. Good lookin' chicks for judges (and a few old guys). In front of the crowd.

LUCKY PARTICIPANTS WILL BE DRAWN (and notified) Tuesday night Feb. 8th during the Land Use Workshop hosted by Del Albright.
Team Challenge participants will be posted in the KOH main booth.
Team Challenge rigs must be near the stage by 5:30pm, Wed. Feb. 9th, and checked in with John Stewart, Cal4 Resource Consultant.

Ok, there have to be rules, so here they are:
No trailers; items must be in or on the vehicle the whole time. You have to dig for everything.
All participants must be in a safe condition to play the game.
Fastest time to the judges with the proper item AS described by the emcee; it’s important to retrieve exactly what is called out.
No dangerous things like large metal objects or spare tires will be asked for. Safety briefing will precede Challenge.
Non-street legal as well as street legal rigs are ok, INCLUDING UTV’s (sidexside).

How to APPLY:
Apply online/email by sending the following information to del@delalbright.com; or bring the info filled out hard copy to KOH and hand it in at the KOH Merchandise Booth, or to the Raceline Wheels booth, or bring it to the Land Use Seminar Tuesday. All applications must be in before the Land Use Seminar Tuesday night, 6pm – that is when we’ll draw the participants.

I will brief Reid on the Course needs when we are out marking it late next week.

4-5 check points are needed. at the check point you need a pen, a watch, and a pad of paper. If you have a radio that is even better.

I want to be really clear on this next item.
In the pictures It looks like Casey is receiveing outside assitance. In 2009 we did not promote the race. The rules where set by sidexside superjam. I don't believe it was against the rules back than, It is now.

You can not get outside assitance what so ever. The driver and the Co driver have to do all the work. The BLM will require us to disqualify you if a spectator touches your race car. In an area like that there will be a boundry that spectators can not cross, if they do we have problems. We are not under a microscope with UTV's like we are with the Ultra4's, but please lets not even let the BLM think they need to go down the same road.

Its a really fun race, I hope we can keep it that way, because I can tell you the UTV guys and gals want nothing to do with the rules we have for U4s.;)


We are closing the Course down to the U4 guys on Thursday so the UTVs don't have to worry about pre runners, but specators are going to all over the trails all week. I can't do to much about them. We should not have too much trouble at 8 in the morning on a Thursday as every one there should know the course.



If you want to come out and play early we start marking the course a week from this Friday, and its a great way to see the desert in your UTV. I will be living in Hammertown from Jan 26th until about Feb 18th. Stop onto the lakebed and say hello.

We have a private freq we use that I don't make public as it would sound like the weatherman at the 1000.

Weatherman is our recovery channel so if you want to listen to recovery efforts that will work.

We will let you guys racing know what the frequency will be for the UTV race onsite.

That Terribles suit is a collectors item! I'm displaying it on a mannequin in my office soon. 13 years helping them in the desert and that is the coolest piece of memorabilia that I have. My next goal is a Rob Mac Mastercraft suit, then I want the Joey D signature series!

There is a set of rules on the KOH web page for UTV's. Basically any engine mod and suspension mod, Saftey is the big key. Non modified stock fuel tank or Fuel cell, Saftery harness, nets, roof.

Sorry I don't have exact details but I say you go for it. If you plan to race your short course car you might want to reconsider as they are too low and too wide and you can't see out of them well.

It will be open for pre running on Sunday after sign up. It will be marked well but because some of the course is shared with the big cars there are intersections where UTV's go one way and the big cars go another. If you pre run with someone first then you can do it with out a GPS but Jeff (promoter ) reccomends one.

Stock fuel tanks are legal. Modified cars are nice but I did it in basically a stocker in a very good time when we were laying out the course. An in shape spotter and a winch for emergencies is a plus!

Engines are to be of the type offered for sale from the manufacture and located in the stock location, and configuration.
22.2B: Engine modifications are unlimited, Superchargers, or Turbo chargers are not permitted.

Rumors are that the fire department in Lucerne was filling water tanks for free. That's unconfirmed, though.

My road map is on the Android phone. :D It actually shows Barnes Road all the way to the stop sign at Hammer Town.

At the drivers' meeting tonight, Dave Cole confirmed that if you are racing, you will not need a temp permit for your race vehicle. I think there may have been some confusion on that earlier. You will obviously still need to sticker any recreational vehicles, though.

I shot around 150 pics of todays UTV race...internet is a tad sketchy here in HammerTown, but I'll upload when I can.

When I was on Aftershock, the #7 rig was working it's way thru, and I believe they were the last remaining.

I got pics at the start from one of the first climbs, pics from some highspeed stuff past Melville Lake, pics of 3 coming down Elvis, plus a couple more sections...Nikon D90 with a 200mm f2.8 zoom...haven't pulled them off the camera yet, but they should be okay ;)

Haven't found time to hit the UTVU camp, too swamped with other things going...

For those who missed this event, you guys missed a great one. It may not have turned out the way some wanted nor did some get the results they expected but I think all in all it was a very good event. The Underground group was huge and our spot could not have worked out better. I'm sure Rusty and Joey D will bring the event to life with all the pictures they took.

Wireless service absolutely sucked in Hammertown so we could hardly get texts to send let alone web updates. Sorry to those who wanted to follow online or were expecting more updates during the event.

Even though he didn't finish the event the Ironman award goes to Brit just for getting his car built and repaired before the event. He wins in miles driven that is for sure!

Bret Carter"s Teryx wins for ingenuity and with nearly zero time to test he finished with a very respectable 6th!

LTI also burned the midnight oil getting Nolan's Teryx done and unfortunately he was not able to finish but the car was a show piece.

I would like to mention something about each entry but I was a little pre-occupied to get a good chance to chat with everyone.

I hope you all consider coming out for the Hammer King Productions GP at Glen Helen later in the year. I know Jeff has some big plans for some future UTV events and I hope you all support them.

Rugged Radios saved my week by swapping out a bad intercom in my car. My new VIAIR system worked perfect. All in all it was great weekend except for my motor running a little rough and the machined bolt on suspension broke and I had to come up with a Presidential Solution.

CASEY CURRIE GETS DOWN IN THE ROCKS and helped people get out of his way so he can continue down ELVIS. Casey started the race with no winch and had fuel issues at the starting line wasting 1 hr.I found them at the top of elvis with a passenger front arm lying on the ground. Here's the fix and they made it down with no winch!

Huge thanks have to go to Reid. Without his involvement, I am not sure the UTV race would have happened at all. And the camp area was perfect. Out of the mayhem and dust.

We arrived Saturday and went out on a pre-run of the first 27 miles on Sunday. Elvis was pretty tough then, but it changed a lot during the week and by Wednesday the trail looked to be a lot easier.

After pre-running, we set about fine tuning our shocks with the help of the guys from Fox. They were a big help. Also worked with the guys from Rugged Radios. They tuned my antenna and we worked on a wierd noise that seemed to be generated by my power steering. Wally and I thought we had it licked during testing on Tuesday and Wednesday, but then right off the line on Thursday it was back. Ugh! Very nice though to have these businesses on the lake bed.

We were all set for the race on Thursday AM. We had the fifth position that turned into fourth when the guy in #1 had an engine issue. Our plan was to get to the front of the pack before Elvis. They sent us off 30 seconds apart and we got bunched up on the first hill climb just a mile out. The Arctic Cat that started first had problems getting up the hill. Things were backing up quickly and Rocker in the Tech 3 Teryx tried to get up the side hill. Wally and I had stopped and looked for an alternate line on Wednesday and did not see anything good, so we sat tight. Things finally broke through, but this gave everyone behind us an opportunity to catch up.

Once over the hill, we dashed off along the sand trails. We got past the Prowler and took a different line than Mark Turner and passed them. Only one left was Tech 3. At the top of the sand hill, we had spotted a little short cut and knew it could come in handy if we needed to pass. We took it and it worked perfect. We shot to the front and it was clear sailing. I backed off a bit to try and keep everything going well. Miles 2 - 6 were pretty uneventful, then my co-dog Wally said we had company. Damn, there went the Sunday drive plans. I stepped it back up a bit and Wally said it was a RZR. There were some huge whoops and I got a bit sideways and Guthrie was hauling the mail right there! Then kaboom! Passenger side front shock came right up through the hood. Crap. The shock tower had sheared right off. That ended our race right there between mile 6 and 7. What a dissapointment.

KOH is a great race, but I sure seem to have a monkey on my back. I really appreciate all the help from everyone that helped us get to the starting line. Truly bummed that it wasn't in the cards again.

Congrats to Jagged X, Guthrie and everyone else that finished. Just getting across that finish line is a huge accomplishment.

Next up for my Teryx (after we get a new shock tower built) - VORRA short course races in March and April. Then the Yerington desert race in May.

I sure hope that the race was successful enough for Jeff and Dave to do it again next year. For all of you on the fence, get working now and sign up early. Starting positions were assigned based on registration date.

Reid summed it up for me....I am so proud of everyone who came out and raced, supported, and particpated at this weeks KOH event! I dont have much online time right now but tomorrow will be updating with images and video!!! What an awesome event! But right now all thoughts are on Mark Turner who not only raced KOH but then left on Friday to go race ASCC where he was involved in a terrible roll over which has him in ICU currently. I hope he is ok........

We just got back...what a great event on all levels. I'll post up some more, but really need a shower right now BADLY!:D One quick comment...Mitch Guthrie absolutely hauls ARSE! We had a great race battling back and forth a couple times and I honestly can't remember having more fun during a race than this year's event.
The XP worked unbelievable well and honestly is in great shape despite being bashed through some really rugged terrain for an hour and twenty minutes and being virtually stock including no winch, no skids other than stock, and no other mods other than wheels/tires and a set of Elka shocks (aside from a few safety requirements like window nets, fire extinguisher, and a couple additional tubes added to the stock cage)...truly unbelievable machine out of the box.

Working on that Teryx for the last few weeks before this race was allot of fun. 6th place is a win for a one man build in a two car garage with a pipe bender and a welder. Bret designed every thing on this car and with the inspiration and backing of his wife Katie (not to mention she was his co driver) got the car done and finished a race that most people wish they could just go to let alone compete on that level. When you do this out of your own pocket with out a race team or a sponsor of any kind it is a Huge accomplishment. The time the other three of us spent on the car was very very small. Way to go Katie and Bret you took the win in my book. You guys are awesome.

The pit experience was amazing! Team HCR shared the remote, and there were 12 guys to look at every nut and bolt on the machine...and also where the driver swap was made. Everything went smooth as can bee.

Bret designed every thing on this car and with the inspiration and backing of his wife Katie (not to mention she was his co driver) got the car done and finished a race that most people wish they could just go to let alone compete on that level. I finally made it home to Alabama late last night. 33 hours, 8.5MPG.:mad:

My biggest mistake was assuming that I could take a RZR with a stock engine and be competitive. We had amazing support from DragonFire and Yoshimura. They installed their intake (Ranger RZR Race Filter | Polaris Ranger RZR Performance (http://www.dragonfireracing.com/rangerrzrracefilter.aspx)), new Yoshimura exhaust (DFR by Yoshimura Polaris RZR Exhaust (http://www.dragonfireracing.com/dfr-by-yoshimura-polaris-rzr-exhaust.aspx)), and the Yoshimura PIM2 and data logger - more on those to come. The difference those few components made was unbelievable. The throttle response was improved substantially.

Due to us being down quite a few CC's and HP's, I decided to gamble on running 30' tires to get through the rougher sections of the course a little faster. We new those tires would be hard on parts, but felt that was our best shot at a win. I didn't drive all the way to California from Alabama just to finish.

Apparently, we must have broken a rear CV pre-running a couple of days before the race. I drove it pretty hard a couple of days earlier to see if we could break any parts, but everything seemed to fair pretty well, or at least as far as we could tell. As soon as the start flag waved and we made it around the first big hill I started feeling a pop in the rear. By the time we made it through the first small whoop section it was apparent that there was a broken rear CV. Despite several attempts at making it up the first hill, I decided to call it quits. Three wheel drive wasn't going to cut it.

Due to all of the mechanical issues we had prior to the race, I keep telling myself that just making it to the starting line was an accomplishment, but the racer in me calls B.S. on that one. You can bet that this year was our one and only "learning experience" year and that we'll be back 100% next year competing for the win.

I can't thank you guys enough for your hospitality and help/advice with all of my mechanical failures. It's going to take me a few days to really take it all in, but one thing is for sure, I'm already planning for next year.

We'll also be headed out West a few times during the year for testing/races. I won't be unprepared in the desert again.

It was so nice to see you! Don't sell stock RZR's short. Mine was completely stock--I lost some speed running the 27's....from what I've heard that is the max size tire for a stock rzr without screwing up the axles or cv's.

Also, I was semi prepared. tech was interesting. Lots of last minute stuff. My hats off to PRP for hanging out and getting me those yamie nets to motify for my ride.

So...you were not alone in this 'last minute' stuff.

I was driving a 2008 RZR with a bone stock engine and 27" tires it has xmf suspension and walker shocks. dont sell yourself short you had a good combo with bad luck.

We lasted less than a mile past checkpoint one, when the drive belt snapped in the Teryx. It was a heavy duty EPI and had less than 15 miles n it.

We will be back next year also but will be in a RZR rather than a Teryx. We preran the course in a stock RZR-S with HCR long arms, and it felt faster than the Teryx. Plus that, I have never broke a belt in the RZR.

Hope to see everybody again next year.

Hi Bill,

Frenchy and I were pleased as punch to camp with you guys, and I tell ya, you have a super team. We are hoping that we will have Frenchy's HCR long travel on his commander sometime this year...yeah...this year...(snork). If everything works out I would like to see Montie and Frenchy do the Hammers. It would be a hoot to watch my ol'man do his 'funky chicken' thang. :0)

Don't give up on the Kawi. Just don't use an EPI belt. Use Kawi parts. Run the RZR also, help up the car count and grow KOH. It was good meeting everyone. I can't wait for rally on the rocks.
