I MISS FUD. HE WOULD JUMP LIKE THAT FOR EVERY RACER THAT FINISHED. EVEN IF YOU WERE THE LAST ONE TO FINISH. I DON'T HAVE GPS COORDINATES, BUT IF YOU ARE @ PLASTER CITY WEST HEAD NORTH PAST THE WASHES. YOU WILL HIT STAGECOACH FREEWAY & SEE LOTS OF CLOSED BOMBING AREA SIGNS. STAY SOUTH OF THEM ON THE STAGECOACH FREEWAY UNTIL YOU SEE PESKY'S PERCH. YOU CAN'T MISS IT. MY BUDDY JAMES "HOLLYWOOD" SAASTA IS THERE TOO.

Anyone care to share the story of Fud for us uninitiated?
Thanks. I always like to hear about the history of our sport and the pioneers that made it what it is...

Im not the best to do this, but Fud was an old motorcross racer The joke was by his own admission he crashed every few miles at every race He started the FRT series, or Fudrucker Racing Team, or superstition series desert races in the early 80s They were located in imperial county between Yuma Az and San Diego..The races were held in plaster city and superstition mountains. Fud would go out by himself on an old crapy quad and layout very rough corses, I think on purpose the track maps were these funny hand writen cartoons. Sometimes there would be small car counts and other times huge turnouts with bigname racers.
He had good contingency and a gift for everyone who entered. He was a nice guy who worked hard to turn out rough interesting races, he died suddenly in his early 50s? of a heart attack and the series died with him untill, MDR? Took over part of it. But alot of racers got thier start with him it was a good communty!

HERE'S ONE FOR YOU DAN. HE WORKED FOR NASA IN ROSWELL NEW MEXICO BEFORE HE CAME TO CALIFORNIA. HE TOO WAS A ROCKET SCIENTIST.
HE WOULD CAMP OUT IN HIS VAN & FINALLY CALLEN CAMPERS BUILT HIM A TRAILER THAT WAS HIS BASE FOR RACE SIGNUPS & AWARD CEREMONIES. HE & BRYAN SAASTA WERE BEST FRIENDS. FUD WOULD MARK THE COURSE ON HIS POLARIS QUAD WITH NO FENDERS & HE WORE A BICYCLE HELMET. BRYAN WOULD HELP HIM MARK SOMETIMES & BRYAN WOULD REMOVE THE STAKES ON MONDAY. BRYAN HAS SOME GOOD STORIES OF THE TRIPS WITH FUD & JAMES TO THE BAJA RACES & SCORE RACES IN NEVADA. HE WAS ALWAYS IN SHORTS NO MATTER HOW COLD EVERYONE ELSE WAS. HE WAS DEFINITELY A CHARACTER & IS GREATLY MISSED. HIS COURSES WERE ALWAYS DEMANDING BUT FUN. HE HAD BIG BIKE, 3 WHEELER & ODYSSEY TURNOUTS IN THE 80S. WHEN HE STARTED THE SUPERSTITION SERIES CAR RACES HE GOT BIG TURNOUTS FOR THOSE EARLY ON BUT THAT FADED TOWARDS THE END. THE DUNAWAY DASH WAS ALWAYS THE BIGGEST RACE OF THE YEAR & HAD BIG TURNOUTS WITH SOME BIG NAME RACERS RACING. HE WOULD SHAKE HANDS WITH EVERY PARTICIPANT BEFORE EVERY RACE & THEN GIVE THEM THE GREEN FLAG. HE WOULD GREET EVERY FINISHER WITH AS MUCH EXUBERANCE AS HE DID THE WINNERS. LOTS OF STORIES OF FUD OUT THERE. OCTOBER IS THE ANNIVERSARY OF HIS PASSING.
PLEASE FEEL FREE TO SHARE YOUR FUD STORIES HERE. WE RACED FOR HIM & ALSO SOLD PIT PASSES, MANNED ROAD CROSSINGS & CHECKPOINTS FOR HIM. HE DEFINITLY WAS A POSITIVE FORCE FOR THE OFFROAD COMMUNITY. THOSE CARTOON LIKE MAPS WERE DRAWN BY SHERRI KUKLA (S&S OFFROAD MAGAZINE) & THEY GAVE GOOD DIRECTIONS & INFORMATION.
FUD WOULD GIVE EVERYONE A NICKNAME & HAD FUNNY NAMES FOR DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE COURSES. PESKY'S PERCH WAS NAMED AFTER A BUZZARD THAT WATCHED HIM MARK THE COURSES FOR YEARS. THERE WAS UGLY BROWN DIRT & TUCKER'S TRENCH.
