2017 LOORRS RD 3 & 4 Photos | Results | Story

Rounds 3 & 4 of the Lucas Oil Offroad Racing Series went down this weekend at the legendary Estero Beach Hotel and Resort in Baja California. Estero Beach has a long history of short course racing but never before have UTV’s hit the track there.

Once again the Production 1000 UTV class was the largest field of the weekend and proved yet another time that the class is a force to be reckoned with. 18 UTV’s would qualify Saturday morning to help set the stage for race day.

Myles Cheek landed on the pole position after posting a lap time of 1:05:387 and only 3 tenths of a second behind Cheek was Brock Heger who’s pulling double duty in his Prolite as well. The two gapped the rest of the field with Mitch Guthrie qualifying third over a second behind Heger.

A few hours later the UTVs lined up on the front stretch in front of thousands of passionate fans who some are new to seeing the class. With a 4 car inversion Guthrie and Brandon Arthur started up front and Arthur wasted no time in grabbing the holeshot. Arthur held the lead shortly before Cheek was able to get around him.

About halfway into the race a rollover by Mitch Guthrie Jr. in the rhythm section would bunch the racers back up but Cheek was able to hold on to the lead. However, with a few laps to go Cheek would suffer a mechanical issue that would let Arthur regain the lead and from there he didn’t look back.

Brock Heger who was sitting in third also got around Cheek to secure the second spot on the podium and Ronnie Anderson would do the same finishing in third.

On Sunday the class would once again qualify for starting positions for the race. This time it was Mickey Thomas who took the pole position laying down a fast lap of 1:03:275, and times overall were much closer then the day before. The top 8 UTV’s were all within two seconds of each other.

Another four car inversion would put Ronnie Anderson and Brandon Arthur on the front row and this time it was Anderson who took the holeshot. Anderson set his pace and was getting comfortable in the lead where he held it there for a few laps until Myles Cheek snuck around him and took the top spot.

From there Cheek got in his groove laying consistent lap times and while Brock Heger would come close a few times to putting a door on Cheek, he wouldn’t have any of it and would take home his first win of the season along with grabbing the UTVUnderound.com Fast Lap.

Next for the Production 1000 UTV class is a change of scenery from the beaches of Baja to the desert of Tooele Utah for Rounds 5 & 6. As we get closer to the halfway point of the season the points battle is already a close one which should make for an exciting rest of the season.
