Can-am Commander 1000 Family Features and Benefits

Rotax 1000 EFI V-Twin Engine
The Rotax 1000 800 V-twin is the most powerful rec-utility side-by-side engine in the industry*. The 85-horsepower, liquid-cooled, single overhead cam power plant features four valves per cylinder and is fed by a 54mm Bosch throttle body and two VDO Seimens fuel injectors. The sophisticated electronic fuel injection system automatically keeps the engine’s performance at its peak, regardless of temperature or altitude. A throttle-by-wire system that works in conjunction with the 54mm Bosch throttle body to produce smooth throttle delivery even if one’s foot is bouncing due to the terrain. The ITC system detects unwanted bounces and filters the input, resulting in more throttle accuracy, especially at low speed. This system also reduces the number of moving parts in the vehicle; requires no maintenance; has no cables to adjust, lubricate, or replace; and the system has an increased life span.

Intelligent throttle control (ITC)
The throttle-by-wire system teams with the 54mm Bosch throttle body to produce smooth throttle delivery even if the driver’s foot is bouncing due to the terrain. The iTC system can detect unwanted bounces and then filter the input, result- ing in more throttle accuracy, especially at low speed. This system also reduces the number of moving parts in the vehicle; requires no maintenance; has no cables to adjust, lubricate, or replace; and the system has an increased life span.

Dual-Level Cargo Box
The Commander 1000 features the industry’s first cargo box with two levels separated by a removable, watertight panel. It offers the possibility to have an upper and a lower bed with and independent tailgate. Carrying capacity of the box is 600 lbs. total capac- ity. (400 lbs. upper, 200 lbs. lower) and has the most volume capacity in the market. The tilt-assist dump-box can be easily activated from both sides. The heavy-duty, high- strength cargo box is resistant to rust and dents. Easily removable tail gates (upper and lower), no-tools needed with single latch, truck-like, upper and lower tail gate with four tie down hooks located in corners. Integrated vertical grooves for plywood dividers and the Can-Am An optional trunk lock is available to secure the lower level.

Double A-Arms Front Suspension with Dive-Control Geometry
The Double A-arm suspension uses front dive-control geometry, which works to eliminate diving under heavy braking and rough terrain. By controlling vehicle dive, the Can-Am Commander handling is more precise in all situations and terrain types. The front end, which features 10 inches of travel (25cm), has the largest diameter front five-way preload-adjustable gas shocks in the industry (36mm or 1.4 inches) for overall durability and better fade resistance.

Trailing Torsional Independent (TTI) Rear Suspension
Inspired from the world of top-level, off-road trophy trucks, this trailing arm design provides excellent control and stability, especially in rough terrain by eliminating scrub. Wheels move rearward as they move up and down producing a smoother ride than the competition, and the side-by-side does not waver down the trail. TTI reduces tire wear and has fewer parts. The durable rear end features 10 inches of travel (25 cm) and the largest diameter rear, five-way preload-adjustable gas shocks in the industry (36mm (1.4 inches) for reduced fading.

Visco-Lok Front Differential
Progressively and automatically transfers power from a slipping front wheel to the one with traction. Visco-Lok has no buttons to push or levers to pull. Plus, there’s no wheel hop or driveline wind-up so the system is totally transparent to the driver and extremely easy to steer. Up to 100% lock up with no rev or speed limiter.

14 Inches (35cm) of Total Ground Clearance
Offers a whopping 14 inches (35 cm) of total ground clearance for maximum performance for conquering challenging ter- rain. We built sag right in to the suspension, which lets the system work in its travel “sweet spot”.

214mm Disc Brakes with Twin-Piston Calipers
Front and rear outboard disc brakes with 214mm discs and twin-piston calipers.

27-Inch (60.6cm) Carlisle Black Rock Radial Tires
on 12-Inch (30.5cm) Wheels

Purpose-built, six-ply Carlisle Black Rock radial tires mounted on 12-inch wheels provide great traction and control in a wide variety of conditions. (Only available on the standard Commander 1000 model)

1,928 Cubic Inches (31.6 Liters) Cockpit Storage
The Can-Am Commander 1000 family leads the industry with almost 2,000 cubic inches of storage in three separate com- partments. There are more than 1,050 cubic inches of storage in the glove box and another 799 cubic inches of storage under the fully adjustable driver’s seat. And, in the center console, there’s another 79 cubic inches of space that can be accessed by either occupant.

1,500 lbs (680kg) Towing Capacity
An impressive 1,500 lbs. of towing capacity lets the Commander 1000 family tow heavy loads.

2-Inch Rear Hitch Receiver
A standard two-inch hitch receiver allows a standard vehicle towing bar and ball to be used with the Commander 1000 family.

Comfort Seats With Sit In Fore / AFT Driver Adjustment
Our full bolster seats offer unmatched comfort levels and refine the side-by-side experience with lumbar and shoulder support. Both seats are designed to allow easy entry and exit of the machine. Adjustable fore and aft without the need of tools, the automotive-like driver’s seat offers 6.3 inches (16 cm) of total adjustment.

Removable, Freestanding Seats
Freestanding, removable seats mean you’ll enjoy remain comfortable whether it’s inside the cab or sitting in our seats around the campfire at the end of a long day.

Adjustable Tilt Steering
The steering wheel adjusts (a total range of 30.5 degrees) without the need of tools. Can-Am engineers and designers designed the gauge to pivot with the steering wheel for enhanced visibility.

Passenger Handhold and Grab Bar
The Commander line of side-by-side machines feature two passenger handhold locations for supreme comfort and convenience. Located immediately in front of the passenger, the grab bar is designed with ergonomic bends for multiple and comfortable hand positions. The additional left-hand grip bar on the center console provides the passenger another handhold.

Dual, Off-Road Cupholders
Twin cup holders, located in the center console, have rubber flaps for off-road use.

240-watt Lighting System
The Can-Am Commander 1000 family of side-by-side vehicles features the industry’s best lighting system at 240 watts. Automotive-style projectors, on each side, run at 120 watts in low beam and 240 watts in high-beam mode.

10-gallon (38 Liters) Gas Tank
The largest fuel tank (10 gallons; 38 liters) in the side-by-side industry provides maximum range out on the trail and at the work site. That’s also 11 percent more capacity than the nearest competitor.

625-watt Magneto
The Commander 1000 electrical system can dedicate up to 300 free watts to power accessories thanks to the industry’s largest magneto.

Easy-To-Use Maintenance Center
Easily accessible and out of the elements under the hood, a centralized maintenance area allows access to the air box, radiator and coolant overflow. Fuses and relays are also easily accessible.

2-Inch Diameter, High Strength Steel, ROPS-Approved Cage
Our engineers used the Roll-over Protective Structures (ROPS) industry standard when designing the Can-Am Commander family of side-by-side’s two-inch-diameter, high-strength steel cage.

Standard & Performance D.E.S.S. Keys
D.E.S.S. is the industry’s first standard anti-theft device. Electronic code in key must match code in ECU to start. The Commander 1000 family comes with two different keys. One is standard key, which limits top speed to 43.5 mph (70 km/h). The second key is the performance key that has no limitation on speed or power.

Color Option
The Commander 1000 comes in red.

COMMANDER 1000 DPS

Commander 1000 DPS
New for 2013, the Commander 1000 DPS includes BRP’s exclusive Visco-Lok QE front differential. This model will be available in Can-Am yellow and feature larger wheels and tires.

Dynamic Power Steering (DPS)
Calibrated specifically for use in the Commander side-by-side, BRP’s DPS system offers variable steering assistance and is designed to offer less assist at high speed and more assist at low speed. This technology also includes a Direct Link setup that uses advanced magnetic field sensors for faster response to steering input than competitive technology, which then minimizes steering lag. Less kickback and more trail feedback is supplied to the operator because of the 50:1 final gear ratio, which is the largest in the industry. A high-capacity 50-amp motor means the DPS will never fade with heavy use and all DPS-equipped models also come with the Visco-Lok QE.

Visco-Lok QE
All DPS-equipped models come with the Visco-Lok QE calibration giving an even quicker engagement of the front differ- ential. It progressively transfers power from a slipping front wheel to the gripping one – automatically with no buttons to push or levers to pull. Plus, there’s no wheel hop or driveline wind-up so the system is totally transparent to the driver and extremely easy to steer. Can lock up to 100 percent with no rev or speed limiter. This differential, unlike some competitor’s differentials, does not have a speed or rev limiter. There were also a lot of RZRs with broken belts, A arms and one came back with the rear end blown out of it. The A/C guys were working on those things 24/7. Maybe we should all get a Kymco, they seemed to hold up pretty well all week.

Believe it or not, everyone doesnt want a small cramped UTV with crappy seats, a harsh suspension and a steering wheel straight from a lawn tractor! :p

I think Can Am is doing pretty good considering its only the third year. How long has Polaris made the RZR? Arctic Cat made a SXS? Deere? Yamaha? Look at the Honda after about the same amount of development time.

WOW !!! I ask a question and you through this BS at me. I don't care who broke what ! Did CAN-AM fix the weak steering that was the question. One guy broke the same tie rod twice on his canned ham. I don't give two shits what you think about my TERYX or any other side x side for that matter. It was a question ???? Maybe I like the new CAN-AM. They sure look nice. What I want to know is if they did any thing to FIX the steering problem. Every manufacturer has problems and weak points and the Kawasaki is by far no exception. I bought the very first Teryx our dealer got in 08 and now with more than 200 hours 32" super swamper tires that have been on it for three years a stock motor and exhaust the thing has been to Moab twice and on every trail the pacific northwest can throw at it. Yea its HOT and cramped but I have never broke a belt, I have never broke the steering or an A arm and I still have my stock Axles in it.

So JoeyD do you know if they changed the steering rack and or tie rods on the new CAN-AM ?

Dude, relax a little. I guess you didnt see the little smilies I put after my responses :D. That meant I was joking and after all, this is just a hobby and we should all be having fun, Kymco or Can Am. I also didnt even bring up the Kawi, so you shouldnt feel bad. They are after all, pretty stout machines.

My point was that everything breaks. Moab is hard on machines and if you hit a rock wrong, snap! I have no idea if they fixed anything on that machine as they are not in showrooms yet, but I can say that I have been around a big enough sampling of UTV's to make a pretty educated guess that after the 2011 model, the Can Am doesnt have a steering rod issue. Steering rack issue, who knows, I guess if you hit something hard enough, it will break. If you read other forums that are aimed at a certain UTV, you will see people calling for a major recall on every model made as they think what they broke shouldnt have and its a design issue.

Anyway, sorry to offend you and Im not the one to answer the tech quesion of things being changed. UTV's have turned into a Ford vs. Chevy type of thing and I get tired of seeing people downing the Can Am which I think is a pretty nice machine for all purposes. Great at Glamis and will climb just about everything as good as any UTV out there. Great running through all but the trophy truck sized whoops in the desert and great for an adventure trail ride as they are more comfortable than anything out there. And with a little mod here and there, they have been winning some pretty big races too with little to no factory help for the teams doing the winning. I think that when they come with new units and get serious about racing, you will see some people in the Southwest change there minds about the C/A. Then again, everyone doesnt drive a BMW and Ford out sells them by leaps and bounds :D

IT IS DEFINITLY A FORD & CHEVY THING. I HAVE ONLY SAT IN A CAN AM @ THE DEALER & I HAVE NEVER DRIVEN ONE OR BEEN A PASSENGER. IMO IT IS THE MOST COMFORTABLE STOCK UTV I HAVE EVER SET IN. I LIKE HAVING ROOM BETWEEN MYSELF & THE PASSENGER.
