Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series Heading to MMP

TOOELE VALLEY, UTAH

The Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series will be making its first Utah appearance at Miller Motorsports Park on June 26-27. This is a unique event that requires unique preparation, including the construction of an all-new short-course off-road track in the infield of the East Course of the main track.

The Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series is the evolution of the long-standing support of short-course racing by Forrest Lucas and Lucas Oil Products. Steeped in the Midwest tradition of short-course off-road racing infused with a West Coast influence, Lucas Oil Off Road Racing brings intense four-wheel door-to-door action to challenging, fan-friendly tracks.

The series includes 11 classes of vehicles, ranging from truck-bodied karts for drivers as young as eight years to ATVs, buggies and full-bodied trucks sporting as much as 800 hp. The action is frantic and ferocious, and the vehicles will have to deal with tabletops, rhythm sections, whoops and jumps in addition to each other in what is sure to be a major hit with Utah fans.

Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series Director Tony Vanillo recently participated in an interview in which he discussed how the event came to be and what fans can expect to see:

How did Miller Motorsports Park come to be considered?

“I was introduced to the management of Miller Motorsports Park for consideration of their venue. After a tour of the facilities and meeting with them, the grounds seemed perfect for a short-course off-road race while offering state-of-the-art facilities and a fantastic infrastructure. Miller is a phenomenal facility. The facility has everything. From the paddock to the grandstands to the VIP facilities, everything is first-class.

This is the newest and most unique venue to feature short-course off-road racing and we anticipate a wonderful experience for sponsors, competitors and spectators. From this meeting, a fantastic relationship has been developed among the staff at MMP, their General Manager, John Larson, and Lucas Oil. This relationship has also extended to the title sponsorship of the recent World Superbike race at MMP.”

It looks like Miller Motorsports Park has a wide variety of racing on its schedule.

“MMP is truly a state-of-the-art, world-class road course that hosts national and international events including World Superbike, the American Le Mans Series and the Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series among others. Between their major events along with the SCCA Trans-Am, World Challenge and Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup, the NASA National Championships, their Mustang Challenge Series and club racing, there seems like there’s something going on there all the time. Then there’s the go-kart track and onsite driving and riding schools and an incredible vintage car museum with some of the rarest vehicles in the world. MMP really has something for everyone who loves racing. We are excited to be a part of it all.”

Is Lucas building the course from the ground up in partnership with the track ownership?

“Everything built for this short-course race and the event itself in every sense of the word is a partnership. We are building the track jointly with our expertise and combining resources to complete a very exciting 1.1-mile, purpose-built short-course off-road track. The track will feature all of the signature jumps, tabletops and excitement that have become the signature of our short-course off-road racing series.”

How many seats will there be on the course?

“There are eight grandstands at MMP, three of which we will have in use for our event. Primary seating for the short-course track will be located adjacent to the track with grassy areas and fence-line viewing areas that can accommodate an additional 5,000 people. We will also be utilizing their beautiful indoor and outdoor VIP and hospitality facilities that can accommodate an additional 1,000 spectators. Although this is our first event at MMP, the enthusiasm for the event has been outstanding and there is a lot of buzz about the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series coming to the Salt Lake City area for the first time.”

Tickets for the the Lucas Oil Off-Road Racing Series event at Miller Motorsports Park are priced at $30/day or $50/weekend for adults, and $10/day or $15/weekend for kids aged 4-12. They are available on the track’s website, at www.SmithTix.com or at the box offices of Miller Motorsports Park, EnergySolutions Arena or the Salt Lake Bees.

Practice starts in 5 minutes. Pro 4 then pro 2 and then UTVs. Word on the street is the UTVs are running the trophy kart track. And also that only Pro 4 and Pro 2s are hitting the mogul section. It's incredibly deep and it looks as if there's gonna be some good crashes. My opinion is this will not be a very friendly UTV track...

Ok. One lap down of pro2 who practiced first, and the Mogul section has been dozed. Probst stuffed the front of the pro2 and almost went end over end and broke the entire front suspension. One mogul stopped
him dead in his tracks.
