Figured I bump this thread since it seems to have died...

Here are some pics of some things I've welded...

That is a thing of beauty.
I am too old now, researching a magnifying lens for my helmet so I don't have to wear my reading glasses under the helmet to weld.
If I was a young man again, and had my druthers, I'd have gone to night school or whatever it took after or before work to learn how to weld like that.
Being able to create things, things that last, is a real gift, one to be treasured.

Paul, you should really practice more....looking a little sloppy in your old age.......hahahahahahha
Ya, there's only so much time to practice when I'm trying to watch all the episodes of American Chopper to learn how....:D

just think how good he's gonna be when he learns how to weld... LMAO!
I hope to be good enough to build a race UTV....someday....:D

Thank you. If you're ever down in my area...feel free to come by my shop and I'll help you get on your way.

BTW, a magnifier should help, just make sure you get the correct percentage of magnification. You may have to try a couple different ones.

That looks great....good skills
Thanks Bruce.

Thanks Bruce.

I usually have 3 or 4 pair of 1.75 cheeepo reading glasses around the house, should I start with a 1.75 magnifier lens? Does that make sense?
My sons are gonna go in together and buy me a new helmet for Father's Day, and this is what I am thinking.
I know this is a practice, practice, practice, skill, not unlike shooting.
I have spent most of my adult life doing that, and can do it quite well. There is a limited amount of info on the basics you can learn from a book, is there anything out there in the line of books that a guy could read and get some good info on basic metalurgy, etc?
I am tempted to go online and find a textbook from some colege that has a welding program. I know Butte College up in Oroville has a welding cert program that is highly respected, maybe I ought to buy their textbook.
Man, I wish I was twenty years younger. I finally have all the tools and a shop to use them in, and my skillset in some areas of fabbing really makes me wish their was a night class around here.
