Feature Vehicle: John Melvin’s 2016 Polaris RZR XP4 Turbo
If you have been paying attention to the southwest UTV scene over the past year then you have probably seen the name John Melvin popping up across your social feeds. John Melvin is a Polaris RZR racer from Arizona, but its probably his work off of the race track that has caused you to see his name. Melvin is the owner of JM Collision Center, a paint and body shop located in Laveen, AZ. Some also know him as Mad Melvin Motorsports which is John’s custom UTV upstart business that specializes in customization. Melvin is a man of many talents, and his 2016 Polaris RZR XP Turbo is a perfect example of his capabilities and passion.
We first met John in 2015. He showed up with one of the nicest looking Polaris RZR XP1000 desert race machines we had ever seen. Melvin was one of the first UTVs to go all paint on his machine vs. the standard powder-coat and vehicle wrap. Like many in the sport, John used his RZR as a means of advertising his business and specialty as a painter and needless to say, his investment to racing is certainly paying off as a marketing tool for his daily work. It wasn’t long before he was painting the bodies of race vehicles including that of Johnny Angal and Craig Scanlon.
We first began working with Melvin while helping Craig Scanlon get his SMG Racing team off the ground. It was during this process of having the entire SMG fleet painted by JM Collision Center that we got to know John and see his talents first hand. It was during this process that we employed Melvin to paint our very own Fat Rod V2 machine. John is one of the few in the world that have perfected the art of smoothing and painting the coarse Polaris fender and trim plastics. His ability to give them an automotive finish and transform the look of these machines is something that few can do and its easily Melvin’s strongest specialty as it pertains to custom paint on UTVs.
After a year of working on the SMG Racing program’s vehicles and then tackling our own Fat Rod V2 it was time for Melvin to get to work on his very own masterpiece. John started with a brand new 2016 Polaris RZR XP4 Turbo and got to work stripping the vehicle down to its bare bones. He left no detail out when building up his ultimate pre-runner / play vehicle. From chassis gussets to paint and body work, Melvin has built up a machine that can take the abuse of hard Arizona desert riding but still has a vehicle that can roll into any show and turn heads.
After months of hard work and long sleepless nights, Melvin produced one of the cleanest RZR XP4 Turbo’s we have ever seen. He worked closely with his friends and race team sponsors to modify this machine. A host of UTV Inc. products, from cage to accessories were used to build this machine up and products from other industry best companies like Method Race Wheels, PCI Race Radios, GBC Motorsports, and Lonestar Racing were also installed. In the end, John has produced a functional and very sexy RZR that anyone would be lucky to call their own.
