Trophy Truck Spec class at Las Vegas Motor Speedway Off-Road Track at 7 p.m., Nov. 1

ENSENADA, Mexico—As entries continue to arrive from all across the United States and from around the world, the drawing for starting positions will be held on Thursday for next month’s 49th annual SCORE Baja 1000, the granddaddy of all desert races. The final round of the four-race 2016 SCORE World Desert Championship will be held Nov. 15-20 in Ensenada, Mexico.

The oldest continuous-running, most prestigious and most rugged desert race in the world, nearly 250 entries, from 35 U.S. States and 15 countries are expected to participate in classes for cars, trucks, UTVs, motorcycles and quads in this year’s celebration of the iconic SCORE Baja 1000.

This year will mark the 42nd time the race has started and 24th time it will finish in Ensenada. The race will be held in the state of Baja California Norte on the majestic Baja California peninsula.

START DRAW

The drawing for starting positions, by class, for all classes except SCORE Trophy Truck and the Trophy Truck Spec class will be held on Thursday. Online entry registration for the race is available at RegisterHereForRace. Deadline to enter in time for Thursday’s drawing for start positions is 10 p.m. PT on Wednesday. Entries received after the drawing will be given the next available starting position within their respective classes.

PRE-RUNNING

This year’s SCORE Baja 1000 will be a loop race and pre-running on the approximately 830-mile course will open on Saturday, Oct. 22 with the start to Ojos Negros only allowed on Wednesday and Thursday of race week (and only in the outbound direction). This will allow competitors nearly four weeks of practice on the race course.

The start line and finish line will once again be adjacent to the iconic Riviera del Pacifico Cultural Center in the heart of Ensenada and the first and last several spectator-friendly miles running up and back down the Ensenada Arroyo.

BEFORE BAJA…VIVA LAS VEGAS!

Jumpstarting the festivities for the SCORE Baja 1000 for the third straight year will be the massive SEMA SCORE Baja 1000 Experience at the Las Vegas Convention Center (Nov. 1-Nov. 4) and the special SCORE Baja 1000 qualifying for SCORE Trophy Trucks and the Trophy Truck Spec class. With both events presented by BFGoodrich Tires, qualifying will be held at the Off-Road Track at Las Vegas Motor Speedway (7 p.m. PT, Tuesday, Nov. 1).

MAIN COURSE!

As it has for over four decades, SCORE has put together another memorable race course, this one for a loop race, with all of the foreboding, unforgiving terrain that the northern state of the majestic Baja California peninsula has to offer. SCORE CEO/President Roger Norman and SCORE Race Director Jose A. Grijalva have designed and finalized this year’s SCORE Baja 1000 race course of approximately 830 miles.

Starting and finishing in the heart of Ensenada in front of the historic Riviera del Pacifico Cultural Center, the course travels in a counter-clockwise direction. It includes the approximate 20 mile stretch to Ojos Negros which is used in both directions. Outgoing, the course heads south from Ojos Negros through Santo Tomas and then runs along the picturesque Pacific Ocean for over 100 miles and then back across to the center of Baja California Norte.

The course covers both sides of the peninsula and includes four checkpoints.

The race will have its normal start from Ensenada to Piedras Gordas, then out to highway 3 around Rm 20.7 and will go to Km33 and get back on the dirt. The course will go past Rancho Grijalva to El Mezcal and head to Uruapan using La Lagrima Rd, a different road than in past years.

From Santo Tomas, the course heads to the coast of the Pacific Ocean and runs down to San Quintin, Nuevo Odisea and then to El Rosario. The course will travel up the well known hill La Vivora, el Arenoso, and will loop around from San Juan de Dios at approximate Rm305 to El Metate Rm 340, Los Martires Rm 363 and go back to San Quintin on the east side of the highway and run north to Col. Vicente Guerrero, Jaramillo and Colonet.

The course will travel a new route from Colonet to Llano Colorado and across to Valley de Trinidad. The race course goes along the highway from San Matias to Villa del Sol then crossing the highway at El Chinero, north to Coabuso Junction and then climb up the summit in the opposite direction as previous races from the desert to Nuevo Junction and on to Catarina. From Catarina, it will be back to Ojos Negros and from Ojos Negros back to the finish line.

The four checkpoints will be located at Santo Tomas (CP 1--race-mile 87), El Rosario (CP 2--rm249), Vicente Guerrero (CP 3--rm457) and Nuevo Junction (CP 4--rm730).

Is RG really going to be in a UTV for the 1K ? What do you guys think ? I see he is listed with Creeds group. Pretty exciting if this holds true. A 4 seat Arctic Cat with the new suspension they brought out recently would put them in the top 3 in the odds for me. You know the car they will be competing in will be built in RGs's shop. This will be the most exciting 1000 in Class 19 for me if this all holds true.

I have heard some things about the new RG Arctic Cats racing the Baja 1000. From what I heard they are outfitted with turbocharged Yamaha YXZ motors and 5 speed trannys. Its sounds like a really cool package but it also sounds like a custom built one off car that is racing in the a production based class. As far as I know if you're racing in the 2900 class you have to race a production based car.

Am I wrong on this, or should it be racing in the Unlimited Class?

We talked to RG in Parker on day one and he told us the cars are production cars built at Artic cat designed At RG's shop. I am quite sure he claimed to have 3 of them at BJ1000. The HP claim was pretty high and sounds like its the Z1 engine.

According to the slide show from the dealer meeting in the 2nd wave of releases there was to be a Turbo race only production model (making 1000 or more units to allow it to be used in races in the oem production classes) released at the same time as their new public production car.

The Z1 won't be used for anything as the motor is no longer being produced overseas (hense the reason AC went to Yamaha for engine suppliers) but thats a whole new story.

When is Arctic Cat going to release the "race only" model to the public? I think they have to have them on the dealer showroom floors in order to raise them.

I'm not sure how that is handled TBH most of the series we are involved with its 1000 units that have to be available to the public. Well if anyone from the public can apply to the race program to get the "race only" model then technically its available to the public/commercially available. However if its stated that it has to be a production model , 50 state legal, and on dealer showroom floors and its in those exact words Id think they couldn't do what they're doing.

I know Robby , Todd and Sheldon were playing with some Pace offroad builds with the Z1 motors in them in glamis last year and since the 2900 class says it has to be an oem motor under 1000 cc's if you read the gray area you have a OEM cat motor (From the 1100 turbo sled) that could be destroked or de-bored, in a Wildcat frame - you have technically an oem unit just the motor is from one division of ac and the frame from another.

:Leave it up to someone to find a way and they'll find a way to make it happen.

I'm not 100% sure how Score / BITD determines what is exactly a production model? Do they need to be on the showroom floor, or in current production with Manufacture intent to sell a minimum amount?

If I'm remembering correctly when Polaris released the XP Turbo at the dealer show only weeks before the next race, Factory guys like Johnny already had their's, yet no one else did and it was not on any showroom floors by the race date. If I'm remembering correctly Johnny and the UTV Inc crew only had a a month or something to build a full race Turbo UTV from when they got their pre-release model.

Same goes for the Can Am X3. They had built race versions and were racing them before they hit dealer floors. S3 had one at V2R along with one other team. I'm not sure if any of the X3 RS models have still hit showroom floors, Vey's did not have one. I know deposits were being taken for that top model.

So I would assume if Arctic Cat is following what the other manufactures have done, they will say they have them in production and with a late Nov or early Dec dealer release date.

BTW series like NASCAR does the same thing. The manufactures model must be available to the general public and have a min of 5000 (?) units built. But again they give le-way as Chevy did not actually release the SS for close to half a year, yet they were racing and promoting them on the track.

Nikal is spot on with what Johnny had to do from my memory

S3 had to run the non production class though due to the car not being on showroom floors yet though didnt they ? or was that because they were running aftermarket clutches/Components ?

All I know is if there are 3 manufacturers with turbo cars showing up to the races it will be interesting to see who/what gets put on top.

The turbo xp was at the dealerships by the time Johnny raced the car at V2R. And the x3 had to race unlimited because the car was not at the dealerships in time to race V2R. I'm not saying don't let the Cat's race I'm just saying they should be in the unlimited class until it is a car that is sitting on the show room floor.

Isnt unlimted UTV a sportsmans class in SCORE ? I cant see them putting all this effort in to be then told they have to race sportmans. Especially with fielding/supporting multiple teams. You have to assume they did thier home work and know this. Im betting they will be NA cars in the turbo class. I hope im wrong. Ive heard about the deal they had going with Yamaha. Pretty smart move.

But if it's not in the rules then it can be open to interpretation. Where is it written?

Best thing to do is read and know the rules as they are written, so you can fight your case. If a rule is not clear, contact the tech director and get a clarification of that rule in writing.

And if a vehicle or team places and you feel they broke a rule, File a Protest.

It sucks, but that is the only way to get rules enforced. Desert racing tech inspection is not like other forms of motorsports where they actually inspect the vehicles for class spec rules before a race. They only tech safety items. They leave the rest up to the competitors to police themselves, which IMO is wrong.

If you think the new Arctic Cat is not legal, and if it wins or places in a paying position, File a Protest in regards to being eligible to race in that class.

I would think you guys would be planning to have one going in TORC next year eh ? Was last years car in unlimted class running a speedwerx super charge kit ? That thing was very fast and easily ran with the turbo cars. Especially at Crandon. I was there for all three days . You guys had that thing dialed that weekend.

Not a big fan of protesting. I have been protested more times than I can count including last year's Baja 500, and 1000, and this years Baja 500 and they could not find anything wrong.
I was just asking the ? as to how can they run a car in a production class that is not yet a production car.

For the record I really do want them to race. I think it's good for the sport and the UTV industry as a whole. Any time there is more factory involvement with large names the sport benefits.
