Three weeks after its originally scheduled race date, the SXS Sports King of the Elements series will hit the track at Dirt City Motorplex after all. This weekend’s Spring National marks the second of four planned rounds for 2020, each of which will present a unique challenge to Pro Mod, Pro Stock, Sportsman, and SXS Mini racers.
The 2020 season opened in March at Wild Eagle Lodge in Eagle River, Wisconsin with a healthy 62 entries across its four classes, and top midwest short course racers like Kyle Chaney, Rodney VanEperen, Jimmy Henderson, Scottie Lawrence, Scott Wasz, and others competing, alongside some demonstration runs from series promoter Johnny Greaves in his Pro 4. In the end, it was Chaney holding off VanEperen by more than five seconds in the Pro Mod feature, although VanEperen got his revenge with a victory in the Pro Stock race over Wasz. Trevor Bushmaker (Sportsman) and Reid Votis (SXS Mini) were the other two weekend winners.
Now, it’s off to Dirt City, which took over the Spring National last year and boasted the largest entry lists of the 2019 season. In last year’s doubleheader, nobody was able to sweep the weekend; Henderson and Chaney split last year’s Pro Mod victories, while Wasz and VanEperen were the two Pro Stock winners, Cory Podolski and Josh Bayer split the Sportsman wins, and Draxton Szymik and Votis took the top spots in the two SXS Mini races.
This year’s action will take place over just a single day on Saturday, meaning one—or both—of last year’s winners in each class won’t be able to back up their victories. Heat races kick off at 11AM for each class, with main events rolling off at approximately 1:45PM. Fans on site will also have a chance to climb into the cockpit with short course champion CJ Greaves and Vision Wheel, although details of the contest are yet to be revealed.
This weekend’s SXS Sports Spring National at Dirt City Motorplex is open to fans that sign a COVID-19 waiver and observe social distancing protocols, with gates opening on Saturday at 10AM. Fans are allowed to bring chairs into the grounds to sit in, but carry-ins are prohibited. Tickets are available on site at $20 for adults, while children 10 and under will be admitted for free.
