Build For Race Without Buying A UTV

I am a newbie to this forum, but not to racing (USAC Midgets), I've been watching and following along for quite some time. My plan after selling my street car at Barrett Jackson this January is to build a SCORE BITD ride. However my calculations are this: Why purchase a UTV from the dealer? Couldn't I just purchase the frame sections, motor, drive, and fenders from Polaris or a Dealer directly. After all, those are the only components I would need, everything else is junk. Spending $20K on a car when all I need are those parts, everything else is aftermarket and in house custom. Your input/feedback is appreciated...

Valid concerns for sure. A local AZ company is looking into the possibility of building rollers that meet BITD tech specs. I have a brand new XP1000 in the shop that I need about half of. Fairly wasteful, but when you start looking at pricing for powertrain, uprights, bearing, cv's, body, frame, ect, you'd be surprised how fast it adds up!

I'm not sure that replacement UTV frames come with VIN numbers, and that is a Score/BITD requirement.

There have been people that have tried to go that route and ended up spending WAY more than if they had started with a complete unit. It is no secret that the mark up is way higher on individual parts than on the whole unit. This applies to cars, computers, motorcycles AND UTV's. What a lot of people do is simply list the unused parts on ebay and recoup a lot of their costs. Plus you will find that you need a lot more than you think you do...eg, wiring harness, steering, brakes, brake lines, pedals, hubs, spindles, the whole driveline including prop shaft, center support bearing, front Hilliard, engine, gearcase, clutches, clutch covers, etc. My 2 pesos!

I am not sure that Score/Bitd necessarily want to see frame numbers....BUT they do want to know that it is a FACTORY frame not a cut up a pieced together unit. Cory is fairly thorough in his inspections and will call you out if something isn’t up to par or done right. And as Far as Score they are very thorough on their frame inspection. We were ex-rayed for wall thickness and to make sure the welds were not fractured.

I agree there is a lot of waste building a race car from a brand new machine….but if you start to add up all the parts I think you will find that you are going to be almost as deep as buying a new vehicle.

And the list goes on.....plastics, pedals, hardware, wheel studs, bearings, rotors, calipers...ECT, ECT, ECT

All very good valid points; Its a long reach, but I went thru the "Parts Catalog" and sent the request off for quotation after checking off all of the little stuff as well. Now we wait...

That would be my angle. Look for a used or totaled unit and go from there. you would have every part you would need other than replacing the bad ones and you could save on the dealer fees..

013 SCORE/HDRA UTV RULES
UTV PRO CLASS 1900 to 1949
The UTV Pro Stock Class vehicles are built using production UTV’s, manufactured
by registered companies that issue VIN numbers.
So, no vin required, but frame must be OEM?

As far as I know Yes. I was talking with Cory S at BWDC and a few guys were asking about extending their 2 seat chassis....and the final word I over heard was you have to buy a new Polaris Chassis to covert a 2 seat racer to a 4 seat racer.

I think the VIN is how you know the frame is OEM
Interesting. I had never heard that before, Is that a score rule? Or BITD? I was present for our chassis tagging and inspection. I dont recall the TECH asking to see the VIN.

Better invest in a Stamp Set:D

I think for BITD you have to have an eom frame score you have to have stock suspension mounting points. I was a part of the Dragonfire "nessy" build and this is why that car could not race in bitd. If there was over 100 builds sold to the public then you can qualify as a manufacture and have a vin to qualify to race in bitd utv class. This was a few years ago so rules may have changed......

Keeping up with the latest; Dealers here in AZ have a limited data base of parts, hence they cant' even order a frame due to being so new, it may be a bit before you can just "order" al la cart 1000 parts... However: Good news is may be able to save apx. 7800$ by deleting all components not needed! Do we really need plastic dzus fastners, plastic zip ties, 10mm bolts and nuts from the factory? Nope! Cheer us on as we will bring another 1900 to the field. Other posts such as Roger @ Score inquiring for more entries... How exciting! I can see it now, 63 cars in 2015 racing the 1000...

$7800 at parts pricing? But you will spend double on the parts that you do need at 'parts pricing.' Don't want to be a 'male reproductive organ' but trust me you will be $$$ ahead by starting with a complete unit then selling the old stuff on ebay. I hope to see you in Baja :)

Done: I will post a build thread as it happens, or maybe not: Feed back was negative, you guys suck.... If you want to grow this class fucking suck it up! I am an idiot? First off, what you are trying to say is a contraction...as in 'you are' or if you know 5th grade english it is 'you're.' So maybe I am am an idiot, but at least I am an educated one.

Plus, do you think this is my first rodeo in UTV off road racing? Not going to go further than that but I am not the idiot. Do some homework before you post.

I counciled a guy wanting to do the same thing two years ago and he was in the same place as you. But at the end of his build he said, 'I should have listened to you MP.'

all I will say is used parts suck you never no what you get. that's why all used parts go into race box for spares. to much invested into race program to take that risk. don't worry matt we are all idiots we race in the desert lol.

Did I miss something? Why so hostile? All of the guys I have delt with on this site seem to care more about helping out as opposed to leading you in the wrong direction.
