Can-Am Maverick Racers Win Baja 500, John Penton GNCC

Valcourt, Québec, June 10, 2014 – Can-Am® Maverick™1000R side-by-side pilot Marc Burnett won Class 19 at the 2014 Tecate SCORE International Baja 500 race held this past weekend in Baja California, Mexico. In Ohio, fellow Maverick racer Kyle Chaney won the XC1 Modified side-by-side class at the Wiseco John Penton Grand National Cross Country race in Ohio. Can-Am ATV racers also had a great weekend sweeping their respective podiums in the GNCC 4×4 Pro class and in the New England ATV Motocross Pro class.

MB Motorsports / Can-Am Maverick 1000R pilot Marc Burnett won the 2014 Tecate SCORE Baja 500 to take sole possession of the Class 1900 point standings after three rounds of racing. Burnett has reached the podium at all three SCORE events this year. (Photo courtesy of UTVunderground.com)

“Highlighted by Maverick racer Marc Burnett’s dominating victory in the SCORE Baja 500, we had several Can-Am racers win their class either on an ATV or in a side-by-side. Burnett, Kyle Chaney and our GNCC 4×4 Pros have been outstanding this year†said Jeff Leclerc, Racing Project Leader, Can-Am. “With wins in gnarly terrain like Baja, the challenging GNCC series in Ohio and at the Maine NEATV-MX race, our racers, once again, proved – no matter the Can-Am vehicle — our guys will challenge for the win at every event.â€

SCORE Baja 500
MB Motorsports / Can-Am racer Marc Burnett had a stellar weekend on the Baja Peninsula, earning the top spot in the Class 19 side-by-side ranks at the 46th Tecate SCORE Baja 500. Going into the race, Burnett had to make a late scramble to replace the engine in his Monster Energy-themed Can-Am Maverick 1000R, but overcame that challenge and then put the hammer down as he put together a dominating run.

With two wins, including the 2014 Baja 500, and three podiums in three rounds of racing, Marc Burnett (MB Motorsports / Can-Am) is the current Class 1900 (side-by-side) points leader heading into round four of the SCORE International series. (Photo courtesy UTVunderground.com)

“We worked tremendously hard for this win. My entire crew and myself did not get any sleep for four days. We overcame some challenges to fight our way to the top of the podium. We are very dedicated to winning the championship with the Can-Am Maverick,†said Burnett.

Burnett, who piloted the No. 1905 the entire race, finished with a time of 13:01:56. He and his navigator Fernando Flores averaged a speed of 34.33 mph to take the top spot on the podium and sole possession of the Class 19 points lead. Out of 17 racers, he was one of only nine racers to finish the 2014 course, which measured more than 445 miles in length. All three Can-Am Maverick 1000R teams that entered completed the race. Burnett earned his second win of ’14 and the third in three races for Can-Am, which is currently 1-2 in the class standings. Round-two winners Derek and Jason Murray finished seventh in their Murray Racing / Can-Am / ITP-backed Maverick 1000R. Maverick 1000R racer Cory Sappington of Desert Toyz / Can-Am was eighth and is currently fourth in the standings.

The No. 1917 of the Murray Racing / Can-Am / ITP team finished seventh at the Baja 500. Winners of Class 1900 at round two of the series, the IV250, Derek and Jason Murray are currently second in the point standings and very much a threat to win it all this year. (Photo courtesy UTVUnderground.com)

GNCC – John Penton
The AMSOIL GNCC series held the 25th running of the John Penton GNCC in Millfield, Ohio. Can-Am racers had an outstanding weekend, winning all four 4×4 classes and taking home the top spot in the XC1 Modified side-by-side class. Can-Am ATV racers scored all 12 podium spots in the 4×4 classes and were led by ATV Parts Plus / Can-Am Renegade® 800R X® xc rider Bryan Buckhannon, who won the 4×4 Pro class. Can-Am X-Team racers Kevin Trantham and Jordan Philips, respectively, joined him on the podium. The victory moved him to within seven points of Trantham, the class leader. Can-Am also swept the other three 4×4 classes, with victories going to Tanner Bowles (4×4 A/B; seven wins in a row), Nick Eichelberger (4×4 C; 4 wins in ‘14) and Chris Bragg (4×4 Sr.; first victory).

The 4×4 Pro class podium was an al-Can-Am affair, with racers Kevin Trantham, Bryan Buckhannon and Jordan Phillips earning the sweep at the John Penton GNCC in Ohio. Trantham leads Buckhannon by seven points heading into round nine.

“I made the switch this year from the Outlander to the Renegade…the ATV is perfect now. This is the best race I had all season,†said Buckhannon.

The John Penton venue also hosted round four of the GNCC SxS Championship Series. Kyle Chaney (Chaney Racing / Turnkey UTV / Can-Am) claimed his second straight XC1 Modified class victory to grow his points lead to 13. Crash Addict / PARCS / Can-Am pilot Treavis Poynter battled from the fifth row to earn a hard-fought second-place finish behind Chaney to give Can-Am a 1-2 finish. A total of six Can-Am vehicles finished in the top 10 at round four and seven are currently in the top 10 in the class points race. Can-Am Maverick 1000R side-by-side pilots Dave Plavi (Crash Addict / PARCS / Can-Am) and Marcus Pratt (Jack’s Excavating II / Can-Am) each made the XC2 Modified podium.

Chaney Racing / Turnkey UTV / Can-Am Maverick 1000R pilot Kyle Chaney is currently leading the GNCC XC1 Modified class after posting his second consecutive class victory this past weekend.

“The Maverick worked awesome and really handled the course. It was probably the tightest track we’ve seen all season and we didn’t have a single issue,†said Chaney. The lappers were a bit thick towards the end, but we kept the distance between us and second place.â€

Treavis Poynter (Crash Addict / PARCS / Can-Am) finished second to Chaney, despite starting from the firth row at the John Penton GNCC in Ohio.

NEATV-MX – Round 4
Can-Am DS 450™ racers swept the ATV Pro class podium at round four of the NEATV-MX series held at Hemond’s MX in Minot, Maine. Canadian Can-Am X-Team Pro Keven Vachon won the Pro class and was joined on the box by reigning champion Travis Moore and Josh Creamer. The Pro-Am podium also featured two Can-Am ATVs, as Creamer edged Moore for the victory. Mathieu Deroy was fourth.

Warlock - Can Am has been at this a little longer than one year. Yes the Maverick is the newer of the race machines, but the quads and the Commander were being raced long before.

I think for the SXS it is more the teams have figured out how to compete and keep their rides together. Which was learned from racing the Commanders over the years.

Once the teams get the Maverick Max dialed in for desert racing it will get even more interesting.

Are they dominating, that is up for debate. They sure are turning heads in the race world and that is a good thing! It will only make everyone step their game up.

Bask in the glory as it is well deserved.

Why is there no Can Am wins in sport quads? Oh wait, that is the one area Yamaha has not given up on and produces the most badass production 450!!!

Just busting your balls!!! I do love my YFZ450

I think its only fair to mention that in GNCC Coastal Racing Polaris is only a few points behind in the series and Polaris is leading the points in the other 3 classes.

I do see the point you are trying to make which is showing that the Mavericks are making headway but using Mud Nationals, a once a year event with a very limited turnout as a platform to state DOMINANCE is rather misleading.

While the Maverick is certainly coming on hot and doing extremely well in XC-1 at GNCC and in SCORE when you look at WORCS, BITD and even Lucas Regionals (not really a fair comparison for Can-Am) Polaris still very much Dominates. At least by the measuring stick you are using.

Its easy to argue, and I will expect a rebuttal from you here (hahah) but you also have to consider the entries. At GNCC Can-Am is very well represented as they are in SCORE, BITD and WORCS. So those arguments for those series are very valid in showing the comparisons. Polaris still far out numbers them, but there are top quality drivers in Can-Am's at each of those series. At SCORE the entries for San Felipe and IV250 in terms of Polaris was pretty slim, but thats no excuse for the Polaris brand because at the 500 they had some of their fastest guys there to compete and Can-Am still got a win.

MY POINT is, don't try to paint a picture of anyone side DOMINATING. Its easier to make a point series by series that Polaris still dominates 90% of UTV competition but of course that number can be argued because of the sheer number of Polaris' competing vs. other brands.

Let things play out, waive your favorite OEM's flag and be happy, but don't turn this into a US vs. THEM thing. I can't even remember a member on UTVUnderground.com running around after every Polaris win posting that POLARIS IS DOMINATING and CAN-AM BETTER WATCH OUT and all that noise. Just enjoy it and have fun.

I say all this because it gets read wrong, it looks like arrogance and then it keeps others from wanting to post when they feel like if they say something some dude or dudes are going to just want to start an argument. Hell, even the Murrays have been staying away due to not wanting to be drawn into some back and forth or being forced to pick a side. Of course Derek posted yesterday which we were pumped for.

And in summery I want to state one more thing. Before all of you jump on my post because I am a POLARIS GUY or some other nonsense, remember I am the UTVUNDERGROUND guy. The guy who started a site so enthusiasts from every brand could come and hang out under one roof. Nothing is better for traffic then some good battles and I, probably more than most of you want to see Can-AM, Kawasaki, Yamaha, Honda, John Deere, etc etc give Polaris a run for their money. No one should have 75% of any market but Polaris does and for that we respect what they have done. We do not deny that what Polaris does should be done by all and I am referring directly to their online and onsite activation. I will not apologize for doing bad ass Polaris related videos, I will not apologize for helping Polaris create Camp RZR and I will not apologize for helping Polaris support their customers and racers. Last year we did some of the same things for Can-Am by hosting an event in Glamis, creating videos for the Murrays and a highlight piece for their Sand Show booth. We have done breakdown videos on Can-Ams and we have done many features on Can-Ams. My point is this, don't ask me to do LESS Polaris, or expect me to do LESS Polaris, instead help me create MORE competitor content, MORE Can-Am related content and SUPPORT the content when we do it by sharing it, commenting and getting behind it when we do it.

It should be noted.. In PR's companies and even us will use the term DOMINATE when a team or brand sweeps a race podium or a series or something. Its used often but for us personally we do not do that to INCITE turmoil or to rub it in. Its merely to be proud. Can-Am is DOMINATING SCORE right now, we can say that with conviction!

Ya Know what Joey I might be a little misunderstood and some people think I say to much stuff that might upset some people in life and Im not very PC ever. But I always go for the Underdog in almost all Sporting events and I always have and always will take the Black Sheep first. Cause its harder and always more of a challenge no matter what. It's not what you do but how you do it I guess.
When Rhinos were the Rage I would not Buy one just because everyone had one so to me they were a Generic thing and I wanted something truly different so I bought a real piece of shit called a Arctic Cat Prowler to play with. Hmmmm Total junk and turned it into something a little better and Faster but whatever , But I learned that the Can Am Rotax motor is a Bad Ass mutha and I Boosted and ran the snot out of it with no Problems bone stock internals and I was sold on there Quality. so I just waited till the 4 seater Max to come along !!! Why would I do that. There was a 4 seater all ready out there ? I just cant go along with the Sheep on the Polaris thing and I think there quality of build is crap. And Can Am is the Underdog and Hated on by the Polaris crowd so here we go again. LOL . Go Canned Hamms:D
